Perfect for true coffee artisans, the French press puts all pomp and circumstance aside in favor of a simple, yet detailed, brewing experience. Though the steps may not be complicated, precision is tantamount, and your diligence will be rewarded with truly unforgettable coffee. It’s all in the timing.
Step 1
Boil more water than you think you’ll need; about a cup will do. You’ll see why in the next step.
Step 2
Pour about a cup of water into the French press. This will preheat the press and condition it for the perfect brew.
Step 3
Weigh your coffee. The exact amount you’ll need depends on the size of your French press and, therefore, the amount of water you’ll use. A ratio of 1:15 is ideal; that is 1 part coffee for every 15 parts water. Remember, precision is key.
Step 4
Grind your coffee. You’ll want a coarse, even grind. This step is of utmost importance, as the grind size affects extraction rate - a grind that is too coarse will cause under-extraction and result in bland, watery coffee, while a grind that is too fine will cause over-extraction and result in an unpleasantly bitter brew.
Step 5
Add your ground coffee to the French press, and grab a timer.
Step 6
Begin pouring the water and immediately start your timer - the brewing process starts the moment your grinds makes contact with hot water. Make sure to pour evenly over all the coffee, helping the grounds come in contact with the water.
Step 7
Once you’ve poured your water, you should notice the grounds floating on top. This is normal and desirable, and even has a name - the bloom. Let it work its magic for 1 minute.
Step 8
Once 1 minute has passed, gently stir and allow the grounds to distribute themselves throughout. Give it another brief stir every 30 seconds, and continue on at that interval until there is 1 minute left on your timer.
Step 9
Stop stirring when there is 1 minute left and allow the grounds to settle. You may spend that minute admiring your good work.
Step 10
The moment of truth: top the French press with the plunger and gently press. Stop about a half inch from the bottom layer of coffee grounds. You may now pour your coffee and enjoy the unique taste of your French press brew.
